Maths Week 2020
Maths week is one week a year where schools all across Ireland take part in a series of activities on the Maths Week website. Maths Week took place on 12th- 16th of October. One of the activities on the Maths Week website was called the target boards. On the target boards you were given a certain number and had to use nine other numbers to try and reach the certain number. In target boards you could not use any number more than once but didn’t have to use all the numbers. You could use division, addition, subtraction and multiplication to try get your target.

Another Maths Week activity was the ‘maths eyes’. In ‘maths eyes’, you would have to try to find things associated with maths in your environment.

On Maths Week TV, we watched two people. On the Thursday, we watched a man called Dr Ken Farquhar do magic tricks to do with maths. He did some really cool tricks and explained how to do them afterwards. We also watched Susan Okereke and we marked numbers on a number board to do with multiplication
We would colour the x2 tables blue and all x4 tables red. We learned a lot of cool new maths tricks from Dr Ken and got to do multiplication with Susan.

One day we did puzzles in class where we were in groups of three and had five minutes to try and figure out the answer in our groups. When the five minutes were up, we would swap around puzzles and one group would be doing the target board. The emoji equations were something we did on the iPads where the numbers were replaced with emojis and we would have to figure out the value of the emojis and then figure out the answer to the sum given. Overall, everyone really enjoyed our Maths Week activities and got to see how there’s maths all around us!
