Carlow GDA Brendan Hayden is currently introducing hurling skill development
to children in Ballyconnell NS in Carlow. Children in 4th 5th and 6th class are
the target audience for this term. The basic skills of hurling and camogie are
the focus for now. Correct grip, swing first choice and first touch are the main
areas of development with each child being given a hurl and ball each for the 40
minute sessions.
These skills sessions led to the children from the school entering into Cumman
na mBunscol indoor hurling competition. This is the first year the girls entered
and played teams from Kildavin Ns, Ballon NS and Clonegal NS.
The boys are in their second year and this year also competed against Ballon,
Clonegal and Kildavin. Hopefully this will be the start of developing hurling and
Camogie in the area.
