Maths Week 2026
Monday 12th – Friday 16th October 2026
The children in Ballyconnell NS had lots of fun during Maths Week 2026! Teachers carried out various maths activities throughout the week while, as an entire school, we marked the week by having a complete Maths Day on Friday 16th October! On this day, every class in the school completed some type of fun, maths-related activity with their classes.
Teachers used lots of various websites in order to guide our learning such as – www.mathigon.org, www.topmarks.com, www.twinkl.com, as well as Primary Maths Curriculum – Oide – Micro Maths – www.pmc.oide.ie These websites formed the basis for our maths activities and games throughout Maths Week and provided a great insight into the elements of the new Maths Curriculum!
Here are a few examples of what we got up to!
The children in Ms Mullin’s Senior Infants had great fun designing some 2D Shape Witches – something which tied in nicely with the upcoming Halloween break! The children cut out the shapes and stuck the shapes onto a blank page to make the shape of a witch! The children really enjoyed this simple activity and made some super scary witches!!

Ms Mulvehill’s 1st Class were also very busy during Maths Week and had lots of great fun playing a variety of well-known, maths related games! Examples include Lego, Snakes & Ladders, Draughts, Uno as well as some simple games involving dice and cubes! The entire class got involved and really enjoyed the various activities! Look at how much fun they had!

The children in Ms Clare’s 2nd Class were also very busy during Maths Week and enjoyed plenty of games based on what they are learning in Maths at the moment. Topics include rounding, addition as well aa money and giving back change! The first game they carried out called ‘Shopping Spraoi’ and is a maths and money sense game created by Maths Week Ireland. Within this game, the children managed physical and template money and practiced basic transactions with a shopkeeper and a banker. The children also built familiarity with €1 and €2 denominations. The banker rolls the dice and distributes coins while the shoppers buy items and receive change. It took a little bit of explaining but once the children got the hang of it they really enjoyed it! Have a closer look!!

Another game which the children in 2nd class played as part of Maths Week was called ‘Roll A Round Number’. This is a topic which the children are focusing on at the moment in their own maths books which made it very relevant for them. For this game, the children were given a worksheet and a large foam dice. They each chose a coloured twistable or pencil and took turns in rolling the dice. The children took turns in rolling the dice to round a number to the nearest ten in that column. They played until time was up or until all the numbers were rounded. The player who filled the most squares won! The concept was simple but under time constraints the children had to think and act fast! Have a look to see how they got on!

Ms. McEvoy’s Junior Infants are also very busy learning about 2D shapes. Last Friday they went on a Maths trail outside in the yard. They had their Maths eyes on looking for squares, circles, triangles and rectangles. Each group of children had a shape to find. They had lots of fun finding and naming shapes.

They found a circle:

They found a square:

They found a triangle:

They found a rectangle:

The children in Ms Sheppard’s class were also having lots of fun during Maths Week in our school. Children explored 2D Shapes and problem-solving. They had to figure out how many sticks they needed to make each shape and how many sides and corners each shape had.

Mr Byrne’s Rang a Sé investigated the volume of traffic passing Ballyconnell NS in the morning time by keeping a tally between 10am and 11.30am. Students went outside in 10-minute intervals to record all passing traffic. They then compared this information with data from another local primary school before using software called ‘Amplify Polypad’ to create a trend graph of their findings! Very creative Rang a Sé! Maith sibh!

Maths Week 2026 was a great success in our school for all of the students & the teachers in Ballyconnell!
