The children in Ballyconnell NS had lots of fun during Maths Week 2024, which this year, took place from 14th – 18th October 2024.
On 7th October 2024 we had our in-service day for the new Maths curriculum which provided lots of new and fresh ideas for the upcoming Maths Week.
Firstly, our school used lots of various websites in order to guide and assist our learning such as – www.mathigon.org, www.topmarks.com, www.twinkl.com, as well as Primary Maths Curriculum – Oide – Micro Maths – www.pmc.oide.ie
These websites formed the basis for our maths activities and games throughout Maths Week and provided a great insight into the elements of the new Maths Curriculum.
Junior Infants had great fun completing a Maths Trail. They walked around the school, with their teacher Ms McEvoy, and looked for different shapes in their environment. They found circles, squares & triangles. They then coloured in a shape worksheet in the classroom.
Senior Infants had great fun during Maths Week also! They did lots of repeating pattern’s activities and building houses using shapes. They also spent lots of time doing maths games on the iPads using the Topmarks websites. They played games called ‘Ladybird Spots – Matching, Counting and Ordering’, ‘Shape Patterns’ and ‘Teddy Numbers.’ Have a closer look at our photos below!
Some of the older students in the school had great fun in their various maths stations throughout the week. They did lots of sorting with lollipop sticks, conkers, spaghetti, counters, playdough as well as lots of cutting and sticking.
Some classes enjoyed engaging with MathsWeek TV this week also and enjoyed participating in the tasks and activities along with other schools.
Finally, children in every class participated in the whole school competition called ‘Maths Eyes.’ For this, the children were asked to take a photo in their environment at home and to put a Maths caption/question to it! Prizes were given for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place! Have a look at few of the examples below!
