Ballyconnell Hall Projects 2025
Category - Community
4 th class have spent the year in St Mary’s Hall. They thought it a good idea to find out a little bit more about this important building in our parish and to share what they learned with their school mates.
After the Easter Holidays, 4th class decided what they’d like to find out about the hall. They then composed questions which they sent to the Hall Committee, who they hoped could answer these questions.
After a couple of weeks, the Hall Committee sent the answers to the questions back to Mr Byrne. The class then worked in groups to produce projects on the hall. They then presented their projects to the students of 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th class.
Míle buíochas to the Hall Committee and Irene Kane in particular who helped collect the information.
Some of 4th class’s learnings about the hall include:
- The building of Ballyconnell Hall began in 1949.
- The construction was completed in 1950.
- Fr Maher was the priest who was the driving force behind the building of Ballyconnell Hall.
- The hall was officially opened on July 12th 1950 with a dance.
- The hall was built by volunteers from the locality. The priest would announce from the altar on Sunday mornings who was required to work on the building during the coming week and what tools they were required to bring!
- The electricity was turned on in 1955 – this was a major event.
- Bingo began in the hall in November 1963, around the time JFK was shot!
- An extension was added in 1992 – this included the kitchen, the storeroom and the meeting room (which is now 4th class’s room)
- The hall was reroofed in 1999 with the old asbestos roof being replaced.
- There used to be a thriving badminton club in hall – this is why there are white lines on the floor!
