Maths Week 2021 took place from the 16th-24th of October. The activities really added up to a whole lot of fun for Rang 4 & 5. Rory and Zara tell us more!
On Monday we, watched Maths Week TV. Andrew Jeffrey, who is a teacher who has a catch phrase, which is MATHS ROCKS! He also has his own book, which he gave away a signed copy of in the livestream. Then he played tic tac toe. He was the O’s and a other school were the X’s. Then he showed us a x 7 tables trick and one for X6 where you draw even numbers as far as 8 and then you draw them again but you half then and put that in front and you get your answer and that was the X6 times trick done. After that, he did card tricks which use maths. That is all we did that day.

On Tuesday we did the target boards. We were on the ipads and went to the Maths Week website. We had a target of 83. We had a series of numbers and had to try to make 83 but you can only use each number once. We reached 89 altogether out of all of us which is mind-blowing! It’s crazy how many sums we can think of with a limited amount of numbers. That is all we did that day.

Our target number – 83!

On Wednesday we used Napier’s Bone’s to figure out hard sums. Napier’s Bones were invented in 1614 by an English mathematician. They were used to figure out hard sums before calculators were invented. You would have to get the numbers you wanted to multiply and go down to the number you want to multiply it by. After that you would get your answer. Here is an example. 49 X9 you would have to find the 4 and 9 and put them in order. Then you go down to the 9 on the right-hand side and write down your 1 after that you add 8 + 6 which is 14 you write down your 4 and carry your 1. 3 + 1 is four so your answer is 144
On Thursday we had the Mega Maths Week Quiz . It was a bunch of maths questions like ‘what is the pattern with the cards?’ and number sums like if you have three circles and some fruit and they can be touching in the circles. This was a hard but not too bad. There were seven questions in the quiz altogether. Each pod had one question and we did one as a whole class. The quiz was quite interesting and challenging but still really fun.
