Science Week 2020 was a great success in Ms Clare’s 4th & 5th class this year. We had great fun, working in groups of 3/4 to create lava lamps! All we needed was cooking oil, water, a clear plastic bottle, Alka Seltzer tablets, food colouring and a jug/funnel to transfer liquids into the bottle!
All you have to do is pour the water into the clear plastic bottle and then use a funnel or a jug to carefully pour the oil into the bottle until it is nearly full. You may have to wait for a few minutes for the oil and water to separate.
Then, add a few drops of food colouring, any colour will do! We used red/blue/green mainly! You will see the drops pass through the oil and then mix with the water below.
Then for the real magic – break an Alka Seltzer tablet in half and drop the half tablet into the bottle. Watch it sink to the bottom and watch the blobby greatness begin!!
To keep the effect going, just add another tablet piece! We placed them on the windowsills then to see the light shine through the bottom of the bottle!
By doing all the above stages together, step-by-step as a whole class, really helped to build the excitement of the end result! Why not take a closer look at the photos below to see how they all turned out!
