Ms. Clare and Mr Byrne chose pupils from 4th, 5th and 6th class to lead the junior classes (from junior infants to second class) in games every Tuesday and Thursday on yard.
First the leaders had their training. They were taught the games which they would be playing with the junior classes. They were also asked to consider how they should deal with any issues that might arise while leading their games.
After the training was complete, each Playground Leader was given a much-coveted Playground Leader high-vis top, a whistle, and a laminated copy of their game. Some of the games taught were Duck Duck Goose, Stuck in the Mud, Hopscotch, Corner Relay and Circle Relay. The advent of Playground Leaders transformed our yard!
Every Tuesday and Thursday our Playground Leaders taught their games with great gusto. The teachers supervising on yard remarked that our Playground Leaders were like teachers themselves, organising the games efficiently and showing great kindness and patience at all times.
The Playground Leaders initiative really was a win for all involved. The senior pupils got to develop their leadership skills, the junior pupils got to learn new games and, on a whole-school level, a great camaraderie developed between senior and junior pupils.
