The 6th class students have been busy making their own travel brochures! Niamh and Richard tell us more!
A brochure is a useful way of advertising a company, place, or country. You will know way more about the place it is advertising after reading one of these. You will find them in nearly every store, hotel, and cafés. We started off with reading some of the brochures from the previous 6th class students. Then we got a checklist each. We were shown some other brochures. One of them we got a look at was a brochure for Wicklow. We had a read through the brochure. We checked off what the brochure had. For example, on the checklist there is a box for titles, what the brochure is about, subtitles, positive adjectives, bossy verbs, useful information, clear paragraphs, maps and photos, and lastly, rhetorical questions. Our teacher Mr Byrne also wrote a brochure called Tshambala to show us another example! We did brainstorms to give us ideas on what to do our brochure about. We made names for our places, cafes, hotels, attractions, animals, language, history, rulers, and flags if we were doing a country.
We got our copies set up and began writing our brochures. We used the things from our brainstorms to make up places for our brochures, we started off with writing introductions for our places using plenty of positive adjectives to make our brochures more appealing. Then we wrote our first subheading. Every subheading we do we introduce something new about our places. For example, wonderful animals, historical history, nutritious foods, amazing amusement. We included many positive adjectives, bossy verbs, and rhetorical questions in every paragraph. When we finished writing our brochures out in our copies, we gave our copies to our partners so they could read them. They wrote 3 things they found interesting or liked about your brochure, and wrote 2 things you could improve on.
The next day we started writing our brochure out on card. We copied from our copies and pasted onto our sheets. When we had finished writing our brochures out on card we decorated them with many colours. On the piece of card, we drew pictures, maps, and flags to represent the place we were talking about. After we had finished, we switched brochures with the other people in our groups to let them have a look. Then it was time to present our brochures! We wrote out things that we might not remember to say about our brochures on cue cards. When the class had finished with writing on their cue cards, another person in the class who was also finished came with us to practice the presentation on each other so we were very sure of what we were going to say and to get some practice done.
We got chosen individually by our teacher to come and stand in front of the class and tell our classmates about our brochures. It took 2 days since there is a lot of students and the brochures took time, when you talk about your brochure you talk clearly and loud for the others to hear. We had some amazing brochures from all the students and they worked very hard on every one of them. These turned out great and it was a very fun and entertaining activity for the whole class!
