We held our 4th Annual Spelling Bee in the hall on February 7th. As always, it was a highly enjoyable and entertaining event which showcased our students’ impressive spelling skills. Read all about it below.
In the days leading up to the Spelling Bee, there was great excitement to see who would be crowned School Spelling Bee Champion for 2020. Two of 2019’s top three, Abi and Sarah, were competing again. Could they both medal again? Or would there be a new champion?
All of the senior classes packed into the hall for the event. Mr Byrne and Ms Clare acted as Bee Masters, while Ms Dagg was the adjudicator. This meant that it was her job to decide if a word had been spelled correctly or incorrectly. She would say ‘correct’ or ‘incorrect’ after each contestant spelled their word.
As you can see from the photo below, there were, as usual, a lot of participants in the Spelling Bee. Mr Byrne and Ms Clare flew through the so-called Easy words as everyone spelled them without difficulty.

By the time we reached the words from the Hard section, we had just 5 participants left: Ashlee, Órlaith, Eshaal, Abi and Mícheál. The crowd gave them a big and well-deserved round of applause for making the top 5.
One more round saw us down to three: Eshaal, Abi and Órlaith. There was huge tension in the hall. Who was going to come out on top? Could Abi turn 2019’s silver into gold? In the end, after some amazing spelling, it was Eshaal who took gold and became our 2020 Spelling B Champion. Congratulations Eshaal! Abi took silver, while Órlaith took bronze. Congratulations girls and a major well done to all who took part in this year’s Spelling Bee.
Eshaal went on to represent the school in the County Final in Ballinabranna NS. Read all about that elsewhere on the website!
