For 4 weeks in October/November, the children had great fun completing the Daily Mile.
The Daily Mile is a great way of improving both physical fitness and classroom performance. The Daily Mile started in Britain by primary teacher Elaine Wyllie in 2012 and has since spread to 85 countries globally. For more information in the initiative, visit https://thedailymile.ie/.
Below are some quotes from the 4th and 5th students about how they found the Daily Mile!
“Lots argue that it is too hard but I think it is really not as it is up to you on how fast you go and how hard it is. Yes, it is tiresome but it really improved your fitness. At the start most people only ran a maximum of 2 laps, but near the end most people ran the whole thing. My fitness has improved a massive amount from doing it. At the start I ran a maximum 2 laps in a row. Now I can run 10 without stopping. So in my opinion, it is not a waste of time and is very fun.” – Leah
“I thought the Daily Mile improved my speed and I always tried to push myself that bit harder than before. I thought that the Daily Mile was great because before I couldn’t do 1 lap without stopping now I can do 12. I also liked being out in the fresh air.” – Croí
“I think the Daily Mile is very good because you get to spend time with your friends and we got fitter and fitter every day.” – Oisín
“I think that the Daily Mile was very fun and it increased my health by a lot and if I was to give it a rating out of ten I’d say it’s a solid 8 out of 10 stars because I enjoyed my experience doing the Daily Mile!!!” – Mollie
“The Daily Mile were really nice. I liked the idea for it. I hope we can get to the North Pole before our Christmas break. It’s also a get out of work for 10 minutes freebie. I really hope we can get back to the laps again next year. That’s my opinion on the Daily Mile.” – Teegan
“The laps on the pitch/court was really fun especially when you’re getting your running in every day. Also when you get more laps from the day before. Overall, it’s really fun to do and a good idea.” – Allie
“The Daily Mile is a fun exercise and it makes you more fit.” – Aaron
“It was very good and I liked it because I got to run with my friends.” – Barry
“I think the Daily mile was a great way to keep fit in school! It was an amazing experience. I really enjoyed running around the pitch for 10 minutes. I also thought it was a great way to keep your determination as I always wanted to beat my last record. Overall, I found it very good!” – Kate
“The Daily Mile helped me with my running and was very fun.” – Cathal N

“I think the Daily Mile is a good idea and my fitness definitely improved over the month. But I think it should have some sort of goal similar to the “run to the North Pole“ because it gives more determination so you push yourself harder. Overall though, I really enjoyed it.” – Conor
“I think the Daily Mile is very good because it is fun to do. It is cool to look back on it later on and see that every day your amount of laps are going higher. It is also good because it definitely improves your fitness as well.” – Meadhbh

“I thought it was beneficial. It was really fun too. Each day, we got better and better.” – Elliot
“I liked the running because I saw that my fitness was improving a lot and I thought it was fun. When we first started doing the running, I was always stopping and I was very slow. Once I started getting used to it I was really fast and I started enjoying it. I liked that at the start you have to go very slow and near the end you start getting faster and it was just so much fun.” - Megan
