Tokyo 2021 Olympian, Marcus Lawler, visited Ballyconnell NS recently to share some of his experiences with our students. Believe it or not, this was Marcus’s second time to visit us!
Irish Olympian Marcus Lawler recently visited Ballyconnell NS as part of Team Ireland’s Dare to Believe programme.
The Dare to Believe programme, founded by former Olympian Róisín McGettigan, endeavours to teach children about the Olympic Games and the ideals which underpin the Olympic movement.
Marcus was a familiar face to some of the children and a lot of the staff at Ballyconnell NS as he had been the school’s special guest for their inaugural Active Schools Week back in June 2019.
The Tokyo Olympian was greeted by the school’s Active Schools Committee before being given a rousing reception in Ballyconnell Hall by the student body. Marcus then gave a very engaging presentation about his career. He talked to the children about how he first got into athletics, his successes as a schoolboy athlete with Carlow CBS, his disappointments and his many successes at national and international level, culminating (for now) with becoming an Olympian in 2021!
All of the children were given an opportunity to hold his bronze medal from the 2019 World University Games in Naples. His spikes and Irish singlet were also eagerly passed around among the students.
After the presentation, children were given an opportunity to ask questions. Marcus answered these in great detail and gave the children even more insight into the life of a top-level athlete.
At the end, there was even time for a spot of autograph signing before Marcus headed off to get ready for training. All at Ballyconnell NS were delighted with Marcus’ visit – many no doubt inspired to go out and be the very best they can be at their chosen sport!
