The annual Credit Union Quiz took place on Friday, the 31st of January in Tullow Community School. As always, it was a tension-filled but highly enjoyable evening! Find out how we got on below, straight from the mouth of one of our quizzers.
In January, Mr. Byrne told fifth and sixth class that we were doing the Credit Union quiz again but this year there was going to be two older teams.
The trials started very shortly after; they were on for 3 days. Each day started with a hard question and also ended with a hard question. When Mr Byrne told us who got through for the quiz we had to do another trial to see who were the subs and the team members. The teams were Emily, Amie Rose, Aaron and Conal and the other team was Michaela, Fiach, Niamh and Sarah; the subs, Faye, Caitlin and Abi.
Then the practising started - the subs practised with a different team each day. Every day we would know something different. We were given sheets about different topics to learn at home. Each day getting closer and closer to the night!
Then it was finally the night. When we got to the Tullow Community School (where the quiz was), we had to sign in. There were tables set out with two seats on each side and four pens. Before the quiz started we were given eight sheets stapled together (one for each round) and two rough work sheets. There were six questions in each round. The first question was really easy- what is the capital of Ireland? At the break we were given a packet of crisps and a bottle of water. The man calling out the questions said that this was the hardest question: it was about John Bercow* and both Ballyconnell teams got the question right! We were given a round of applause. When the quiz was over our team came third, we went up and got a picture and were given our prize in an envelope.
How it works is the two teams from the Tullow Credit Union area that come first go through to the finals in Kilkenny with all the other teams that have won.

*FYI - John Bercow was the Speaker in the House of Commons in Westminster who stepped down in 2019!
