A new school year means lots of new running initiatives yet again!
A new school year means lots of new running initiatives yet again!
This year, throughout the month of October we have been participating in the ‘Running Around Ireland’ initiative as part of the Active Schools process.
We started the initiative on 4th October 2022 for 4 weeks. Similarly to the last time that we completed this initiative - every teacher was supplied with a list of different destinations and landmarks in Ireland so that each teacher would choose one for their class to run to, before recording each child’s number of laps. It was really encouraging for both the teachers and the children to see the number of laps completed, improving from day to day!
The children ran laps around the basketball court or football pitch, weather depending, for 5-10 mins each day, all the while bearing in mind that 1 lap = 1 km! As per all the running initiatives we have completed here in Ballyconnell, the aim was to see how many landmarks in Ireland we could visit as a whole school in 4 weeks. Some of the students in the older classes even decided to run in pairs, as they did for previous running initiatives, in order to help them maintain their pace and to encourage one another to go that but further every day.
Without a doubt, the ‘Running Around Ireland’ initiative has certainly been a great success among our students and is one which we will definitely be returning to at some stage again throughout the school year!
