Science Week 2025
Category - Science
Science Week was held from 10th – 14th November 2025 in Ballyconnell School. Every class carried out a variety of experiments and pupils used their Science exploratory and investigation skills.
Junior Infants took on the important role of Scientists as they carried out experiments for Science Week.
Dancing Raisins Experiment
The first Experiment was to put raisins into glass of 7up and watch what happens? The raisins first sink then float to the top and back down again. Then they compared what happens when raisins are put in water. The raisins sink to the bottom.

Skittles Experiment
In groups the children put skittles around the edge of a plate. Teacher poured warm water on the plate and the children observed what happened. The shell of the skittles are made of sugar. The sugar dissolved and created a rainbow effect on the plate.
Senior Infants Science Week Experiments

First Class Science Week 2025
Self Inflating Balloon experiment

Lava Lamp Experiment – We made lava lamps in glass jars.

Soap and Pepper Experiment – We used a bowl of water and sprinkled pepper into it. When we put in out finger the pepper moved to the bowl of the dish.
Science Week in 2nd Class
Jumping Rice!
The children in Ms Clare’s 2nd class had lots of fun this week for Science Week 2025.
This week we were looking at sound waves and how sound is created through sound waves or vibrations. Firstly, we stretched some cling film across the top of a glass & plastic bowl. Then pour a teaspoon or a small amount of rice on top of the cling film. Hold a baking tray / metal tray close to or near the bowl. Strike the tray with a wooden / metal spoon. Watch the rice JUMP! Then we explored different sound waves by striking tray lightly, closer, further away, directly above the rice etc. We discovered that by hitting the tray harder and with a metal spoon, instead of a wooden spoon, it made the rice jump higher!
