6th Class have been learning all about Africa lately. Here, Cian and Niall tell us all about their Maasai-inspired art lesson.
Today we did an art lesson on the Maasai tribe. They come from northern Kenya and parts of southern Tanzania. The tribe speak a main language called Maa which is related to the to the language of the Dinka and Nuer tribes of Sudan. Some of the tribes people can speak English and Swahili too.
The Maasai tribe are famous for lots of things but probably most known for their very colourful dresses.

Here’s how we produced the lovely pieces you see below.
First you start off by drawing the head. Secondly, draw a long rectangle for the body. At the end of the rectangle you use a thin marker for the legs. After you do the legs, arms, body and head, you draw the pattern. You can draw many things like dots, lines, circles and many different patterns. You put lots of colour to draw attention to the vibrant clothes of the figures. The more colour you put on the Maasai figures’ dress the more attention you put on the Maasai figures the better it stands out.
If you want to do Maasai figure, you will need a lot of colours to make it look really good. If you want to make it stand out get markers because markers look the best for Maasai figures. Once you have that done you can draw a basket on their head or a shield on the hand of the Maasai figure.
