Just before the Easter Holidays, our 6th class students headed to SETU to partake in the FAI Primary 5s competition.
Primary 5s 2026
This year, we entered one boys’ and one girl’s team.
Our boys found themselves in a tough group alongside Scoil Phádraig Naofa, Hacketstown, Grange and Bennekerry 2. The top two teams would qualify for the finals.
The boys took on Scoil Phádraig Naofa in the first game and came away with a 2-2 draw after playing very well. Game two was against old rivals Hacketstown and this proved another tight affair. At the final whistle, we had our first win – 3-2. This was only after some heroic defending from Aaron Denton, among others, who made several brave blocks to keep the lead intact. Regan Rossiter was also very busy between the sticks.
Our final two group games were far more comfortable affairs – a 6-1 victory over Grange NS and a 5-1 victory over Bennekerry 2. Jamie Timmins, Mason Murphy and Darragh Coleman-Murray were among the goals in these two games while Jamie Donohue deputised in goal for Regan Rossiter.
This all meant that we ended the group stage on 10 points, a total which was matched by Scoil Phádraig Naofa. This meant that we would need a play-off to decide the group winners. The group winners would then play the runners up of group 2, Bennekerry 1.
Our boys saved their best performance for this crucial game. Excellent passing and build up play saw us dominate possession. A Mason Murphy strike, smashed in off the post, gave us the lead. Scoil Phádraig Naofa then piled on the pressure but once again, our defence stood firm before Murphy wrapped up the victory with a stunning strike into the top corner with time just up.
We started the final against a tough Bennekerry outfit very well, dominating the possession and chances early on. Unfortunately, Bennekerry scored with their very first chance to leave us trailing 1-0. Amazingly with their second shot they scored again to leave us losing 2-0 at half-time. We searched for the goal that would have brought us back into the game but Bennekerry continued to defend strongly. When the final whistle sounded, the score remained 2-0 and so, our boys’ journey in this year’s Primary 5s came to an end. Well done boys on progressing so far!
The squad was: Regan Rossiter, Aaron Denton, Darragh Coleman-Murray, Mason Murphy, Jamie Timmins, Reuben Wilson, Jamie Donohue, Oliver Holligan and Jack McGrath.
