Thanks to our Parents Association, we recently had a big addition to our yard – a new adjustable basketball hoop! 6th class had a mini-tournament to inaugurate it.
On Monday morning the 19th of April there was much excitement among our students as they entered the school grounds and noticed a new addition to our clós – a brand new, fully adjustable, free-standing basketball hoop. 6th class decided to have a 3 v 3 basketball tournament to mark the hoop’s arrival.
Each team played 4 games in the tournament, the top two teams qualifying for the final. All games were very competitive with some lovely skills on display. Importantly, virtually every player improved as the tournament progressed with players getting used to using their dribble, timing their passes and relaxing on the ball.
There were some wonderful displays of point scoring and last second buzzer beaters! Most notably, Cian scored an astonishing 7 baskets in 5 minutes in one of Foireann 2’s victories.
The final saw Foireann 1, comprising of Fiach, Eshaal and Michaela take on Foireann 3’s Niall, Amierose and Colm. Amierose was injured for the final so Emma took her place in the starting line up. In what was a very tense and competitive affair, Foireann 3 led through Niall’s basket with time almost up. Then, with just 5 seconds to go, Fiach took the final to sudden death with a great basket.
There were several close calls for both sides in sudden death before Fiach once again found the target to secure victory for Foireann 1. Comhghairdeas Foireann 1!
Mile buíochas to our Parents Association for their help in securing funding for what is a great piece of equipment which will no doubt bring countless hours of fun over the coming months and years.
