Throughout the month of March-May, we have been participating in the ‘Skip around Europe’ initiative as part of the Active Schools process.
We started the initiative on 31st March 2025 for 4 weeks – 2 weeks before Easter holidays and continued it for the 2 weeks after the Easter holidays.
Similarly, to the last time that we completed this initiative - every teacher was supplied with a list of different destinations and landmarks in Ireland so that each teacher would choose one for their class to skip to, before recording each child’s number of skips. It was really encouraging for both the teachers and the children to see the number of skips completed, improving from day to day!
Firstly, we looked at and examined the Skipping tutorial videos, which were available on the Active Flag website – before giving the skipping a go ourselves! The youngers students in the school started skipping using hula hoops for the first week and then moved on to using the skipping ropes for the last 3 weeks!
The children skipped around the basketball court for 5-10 mins each day, all the while bearing in mind that 1 skip = 1 km!
Without a doubt, the ‘Skip around Europe’ initiative has certainly been a great success among our students and is one which we will definitely be returning to at some stage again in the next school year!
